Specialized Memory Care Services

What's the difference between memory care and regular in-home care services? While the main functions remain the same -- helping you or your loved one remain safe and independent in their homes while meeting basic needs including assistance with housekeeping, activities of daily living, and providing companionship or medical care -- memory care includes enhanced services that focus on patient safety and cognitive support. General senior care can be included as the basis of memory care in addition to the more comprehensive services that comprise memory care. Since Alzheimer's disease and dementia can affect judgment and cause a variety of symptoms that include hallucinations and short- and long-term memory loss, memory care services help reduce negative behaviors and provide patient-centered care that reduces falls, wandering, and other safety concerns that don't typically affect other patients.

As cognitive decline persists, memory care services can be tailored to include assistance with mobility, grooming, bathing, dressing, toileting, and housekeeping. Memory care includes around-the-clock supervision and regular cognitive evaluation and intervention that allow for maximal freedom to live comfortably in their own homes.

At Angels on Call Homecare, we offer memory care services in the comfort of your own home on a part-time, full-time, respite, or live-in basis. We have housekeepers, home health aids, certified nursing assistants, home health nurses, and therapists, all trained in memory care, to meet all of your needs. Whatever your care needs require, we can help.

Understanding The Impact of Alzheimer's Disease

It is estimated that nearly 5.8 million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer's disease and nearly 16 million unpaid caregivers provide their care. Most of these caregivers are family members who are also trying to manage their families and careers at home. The lack of understanding of neurological and cognitive disorders by the general public leads to increased burden on caregivers and negative symptoms in those who suffer from the disease. With a better understanding of the disease and early intervention, those who suffer from Alzheimer's disease can safely live longer at home, decreasing their reliance on their family members. In-home caregivers can help.

10 Early Signs of Alzheimer's Disease

To help mitigate negative impacts and slow the progression of the disease for better outcomes, early identification and early intervention are key. Here are ten early signs of Alzheimer's that warrant further investigation.

Memory loss - watch for increased reliance on lists and confusion about times and places
Daily tasks and chores become a challenge
Lapse in judgment or problem-solving skills
Changes in hygiene and hobbies
Vision changes
Difficulty processing visual or spatial relationships
Losing or placing objects in the wrong place
Mood swings or change in personality
Speech changes - repeating self or jumbled speech
Difficulty concentrating

Because Alzheimer's disease is progressive and affects a variety of mental functions and neural connections, symptoms may be progressive and seem to worsen as the day continues, resulting in irritability or anger as the individual becomes increasingly confused.

In-Home Memory Care For Dementia Patients Improves Quality of Life

Those who suffer from dementia, Alzheimer's disease or other cognitive deficits, are at a disadvantage in regards to access to quality memory care. Because each day may look and feel different and each patient's symptoms and progression varies, it can make it difficult to find the personalized care they need. Many people who suffer from long-term cognitive deficits are able to perform tasks including personal care and activities of daily living, but may lose focus, sound judgment, or problem-solving skills. In a typical long-term care setting, they may have their physical and medical needs met but fall short of meeting their emotional, cognitive, and memory needs. Specialized memory care delivered by trained professionals in the comfort of their own home can significantly improve the quality of life for dementia patients as well as improve long-term outcomes.
